The Great War was the first mechanised war, with destruction on a massive scale.  The war changed British society forever.  Despite only having been a town for around 30 years, Barry lost around 750 men during the Great War, the names of which are inscribed on the wall at the Memorial Hall.  Last year I asked the Vale Council if we could use the former Barry Tourist Information Centre building in which to create a Great War Commemorative Centre.  Through a letter to our MP, Alun Cairns we...

Every Tuesday evening Poole Harbour, in Dorset is host to thousands of motorbikes, with thousands of other vistors coming to watch and admire the spectacle. This isn`t a once a year event - it`s a once a WEEK event, generating masses of trade for businesses, and revenue for the local council through parking. It's a simple thing to organise, and simply requires the road being closed to all except motorbikes. I`d like to see this at Barry Island - and to be honest, I`m amazed it hasn`t...

Until it was closed to events by the Vale Council I had never appreciated the importance of the grass area at Hood Road for events. It is an ideal events field, being located with easy parking, with the Barry Tourist Railway halt, and across the road from Barry`s largest hotel. The Vale Council should reassess its plans for the field, and re-open the site to events in time for events planners to make use of it next season. This DOES NOT mean think about it and then act next year, as by...

Many YP in Barry have quads, MX bikes and radio-controlled cars. There`s also loads of brown land around the docks. It wouldn`t be the hardest thing in the world to create an off-road park where these people could enjoy their hobby safely. Providing a proper place for them to enjoy their hobby should then hopefully quell the need to them to use parks etc. It would be a great CSR project for a company like ABP (say).

The former (now closed) Tourist Information Office building on Barry Island would make a great Vale Heritage Centre. It`s location is ideal, and the potential for holding events there is huge. I`d like to suggest that the Barry Regeneration Board facilitate this idea. Word on the street is that it will end up as another cafe - just what Barry Island needs. NOT. The Options Appraisel carried out by DBA Consulting on behalf of the Vale Council ( at the cost of circa £12k according to...

August 2014 marks the begining of the Centenary of the First World War. The war changed society, and affected all of our lives to this day. The Barry Memorial Hall and Cenataph were built to mark the war, and most villages in Glamorgan have their own monuments. So how ARE we going to mark the important events from 2014 - 18? Barry at War group, itself one of 850 'First World War Centenary Partners of the Imperial War Museum' around the world, have created a WW1 'Trench Experience' at the...

Word on the street is that the old toliet block at Barry Island is to be tidied up, like was done at the Pumping House ( which would make a great combined Arts & Heritage Centre but is still up for sale). The Toilet Block is a historic building in a prime tourist location. I would suggest that this building be tidied up ( like the pumping house) and established as a Glamorgan Heritage Centre. With the growth in heritage tourism , the increase in 'stay in the UK holidays' and the...

Barry and the surrounding area is in danger of becoming just another suburb of Cardiff, and yet has a massive amount of heritage that should be promoted. Ideally a large facility should be established in which to create a combined Arts & Heritage Centre, that could not only provide a facility for both of these aspects of our culture, but also attract both funding streams. The facility should be in a well visited area, such as the Barry Waterfront or Barry Island. Drawing this to a...
