The recent 'From the Jam' gig at the Barry Memorial Hall was a great evening for all that attended - and more importantly had an audience of 800 people - evidence of an untapped demand for live music in Barry. Yes, we have the legendary GlastonBarrry and Cadstock Festivals.Yet should the Memo also put on regular live music? Back in the '70's the Memo was one of Wales' leading live music venues with most of the major bands of the time playing there. There seems to be scope to develop a...

Just had a wonderful time on Saturday at Barry Island Junior School Summer School Fair today. Also, it was Cadoxton School's Summer Fair as well.I would imagine most school's in Barry would have their School Summer Fairs around the same time  - so why not have them all formally on the same day to make it more easier to promote the idea of a 'School Summer Fair Day'. If adopted, not just across the Vale but also backed by Welsh Government, the idea of a national 'School Summer Fair Day'...

The Big Lunch is a great idea - but so far does not seem to be happening in Barry. Can we make it happen on the official Big Lunch day - the first Sunday of June - June 7th. The Big Lunch originally was conceived by the Eden Project in Cornwall with the idea that wouldn't it be great if every street in the UK, people sat down together and got to know all the good people who live near them? It would encourage small talk, and hopefully leading to bigger talk and conversations that inspire...

If there was a competition for the most surreal or unlikely celebrity combination in any advertising, would the poster featuring Gavin & Stacey's Nessa with Humphrey Bogart outside the Carousel Amusement Arcade on Barry Island win the prize? Intrigued by what was going through the mind of the creative and their creative thought process when producing this work! What do you think of the ad? Anyone know the story behind how it came to be? What must be one of  the greatest tourism publicity stunts of all time could be an inspiration for Barry. It must be the 150th anniversary of the naming of the North Wales village Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. The tourist prospects of an otherwise fairly nondescript place were transformed into a global icon.(it only has a population of 3,000 but is world famous) Could Barry Island create a new station nameplate with an even longer name to out trump...

News of a major £220million investment by Network Rail to 'improve' local rail services could actually lead to a worse service for Barry people. Work will see the re-opening of a Platform 3 at Barry Station and a new Loop service connecting BarryIsland with Barry Station - presumably similar to the service between Cardiff Queen Street and CardiffBay. Due for completion by 2015, the scheme is claimed to be 'congestion busting' and it is claimed 'will potentially provide hundreds of extra...

Local Government reorganisation is again on the agenda for Barry following the Williams Commission report. It recommends Councils in Wales should merge leaving 10, 11 or 12 local authorities rather than the current 22, suggesting reducing council numbers by mergers using existing boundaries. Discussions about how to proceed with the merger should begin by Easter. This will have a major impact on Barry and its future. Should the Vale of Glamorgan Council stay or go? Is a merger with...

Barry’s beautiful beaches could lay claim to another accolade as the country’s top spot for ‘Nippy Dipping’ – to go swimming in  the sea in winter. The term ‘nippy dip’ was coined by Barry IdeasBank follower @MartinColes to describe those madcap dashes into the freezing winter seawater. Barry Island has 2 major organized charity swims this year. The Whitmore Bay Surf Lifesaving Club will be holding its Boxing Day swim at noon from the Western Shelter on the Island. Taking the plunge...

The tragic drowning of 14 year-old Hollie McClymont in WhitmoreBay last June reveals the need to further improve beach safety.  While there is limited scope to stop people swimming outside the designated zone, maybe one lesson from the tragedy is to improve awareness of how passers-by could respond more effectively in the event of an emergency. Psychological studies reveal that in critical situations most people’s likely reactions is to do nothing or panic, while the ‘Bystander Effect’...

The success in protecting and promoting the Welsh Language is a major achievement, to be celebrated both across Wales and the UK. While the topic may provoke responses from different ends of the spectrum, of either ‘not enough being done’ or ‘too much being done’, nonetheless, the actions by Welsh speakers, the Welsh community, and governments at different levels have all contribute to an outstanding international case study of preserving and giving new life to a language and culture; an...

While visiting the West Quay Medical Centre it seemed there was a great opportunity missed for some quality and locally relevant public art. The Centre's atrium reception area is very large and well lit with large wall spaces. Yet, the opportunity for using the large spaces as a canvas for some art or even sculpture was missed. Instead, there is very large lettering telling you, in case you didn't know, that you were sitting in 'West Quay Medical Centre'. The large signwriting must have cost...

With the Vale of Glamorgan Council entertaining their counterparts from Minehead at the Barry Yacht Club there is speculation of what greater links could be established between the two areas. What about a ferry service? What would work best? And what frequency of service? All year round or seasonal? A car ferry would have the attraction of cutting down journey times to the southwest? The big challenge is creating the docking infrastructure and establishing a service that is commercially...

High Street Barry is home to some great independent retailers. They demonstrate how being small doesn't mean you have to be inferior or second rate. Indeed, there are many examples of independent retailers who are literally shop windows for going the extra yard in service, or developing great new products. One resource beyond them however, is car parking. Would-be shoppers can sometimes have to drive away frustrated that they couldn't find a car parking spot. Talking to a number of traders...
