Is Barry Island the Nippy Dip Capital of Wales?

Barry’s beautiful beaches could lay claim to another accolade as the country’s top spot for ‘Nippy Dipping’ – to go swimming in  the sea in winter.

The term ‘nippy dip’ was coined by Barry IdeasBank follower @MartinColes to describe those madcap dashes into the freezing winter seawater.

Barry Island has 2 major organized charity swims this year.

The Whitmore Bay Surf Lifesaving Club will be holding its Boxing Day swim at noon from the Western Shelter on the Island.

Taking the plunge on New Year’s Day is the major charity swim with over 200 people expected to take part. It starts again at noon, from the Western Shelter. It will be raising funds for The Teenage Cancer Charity Trust.

If you don’t want to take part in an organised swim why not just take a Nippy Dip plunge with friends? The experience is great fun, bracing and certainly wakes you up for the rest of the day. Remember, to follow safety guidelines.

Should there be an official ‘Nippy Dip’ season for Barry Island to extend from Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Twixtmas and the New Year’s holidays?

Could this be an additional out of season attraction for Barry?

Do you Nippy Dip? Would you consider having a go at Nippy DIpping?
What could be done to encourage Nippy Dipping?
